Wildlife Sanctuary Marks a Significant Step Towards Marine Life Conservation
Lolita, a captive killer whale weighing 2,268kg, is set to be released into the ocean after spending over 50 years in captivity at a Florida aquarium. The decision comes following a deal reached between the aquarium and animal welfare advocates, including the nonprofit organization Friends of Lolita. The release plan involves transporting Lolita by plane to an ocean sanctuary located in the waters between Washington and Canada.
Wildlife Sanctuary
The release of Lolita is a significant step towards restoring the natural environment and rectifying past exploitation and development, which have contributed to the decline of marine life. The use of wildlife sanctuaries is a crucial measure in protecting and preserving marine mammals like Lolita.
Lolita’s release has been years in the making, starting with the transfer of the aquarium’s ownership and later partnering with the nonprofit to provide medical care to the whale. Experts believe that the reunion of Lolita with her pod may have a positive impact on her longevity. This is especially significant considering that Lolita’s mother, Ocean Sun, is still swimming free with other members of their clan and is estimated to be over 90 years old.
Once in the ocean sanctuary, Lolita will initially swim inside a large net while trainers and veterinarians will teach her how to catch fish. She will be under 24-hour care until she becomes accustomed to her new surroundings. Lolita’s release will not only allow her to live out her days in a more natural environment but will also create awareness about the harm captivity does to wild animals and the importance of wildlife sanctuaries in protecting and preserving marine life.
